TISD’s Desegregation Order Lifted
Posted/updated on: August 27, 2016 at 4:36 pmTYLER – It has taken 46 years, but the Tyler School District is out from under a federal desegregation order. The case was formally dismissed today by Judge Michael Schneider. The Tyler school board voted in May to seek the lifting the federal desegregation order. The district sought unitary status, which is achieved when no racial discrimination involving faculty, staff, student assignment, facilities transportation and extracurricular activities exists in the district. School district attorney John Hardy previously said the district has worked very hard to attempt to meet the requirements in an effort to have the order lifted. And he said, if the order were lifted, TISD could save money in a number of areas including transportation and operating costs.
