mosquitoTYLER – Routine mosquito samples collected in Tyler and sent to Austin showed one tested positive for West Nile Virus. Results returned to Tyler Monday showed positive for West Nile virus in the sample batch of mosquitoes taken from the 3000 block of Terilinga Drive, on the city’s southeast side. Tyler Mosquito Control treated the target area late last week. And they are conducting a door-to-door campaign to inform and educate residents in the area about the virus and preventative measures. As a preventative measure, the city treats standing water with larvicide and insect growth regulator tablets and fogs. And they will continue these treatment practices for the remainder of mosquito season.

Last month, two sample batches turned up positive for the West Nile Virus. One batch was taken from Kidd Drive and the other sample was collected at Donnybrook Avenue across from Rose Rudman Park.

According to a news release from the city, all citizens are encouraged to remember the 4 Ds to optimize protection from mosquitoes:
*Deet: use insect repellent while outdoors at all times to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes and other insects.
*Dress: wear long, loose and light-colored clothing – including pants and long sleeves.
*Drain: drain all standing water in and around the home and office.
*Dusk and Dawn: limit outdoor activities during the dusk and dawn hours as
mosquitoes are most active during those times.
