Tyler Wins Two Awards

TYLER – The City of Tyler has been presented a couple of awards. At Wednesday’s city council meeting, budget and beautification awards were given to the city.

The City of Tyler has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its fiscal year 2015-2016 budget document. This is the tenth consecutive year that the City of Tyler’s budget document has received this special recognition. The award comes from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. The city had to meet nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation to be considered for this award.

The city was also presented with the Texas Municipal League’s 2016 Excellence Award for City Spirit. The city received the “Beauty and the Box” project on October 4, during the annual TML Conference in Austin. This award recognizes projects focused on neighborhood clean-up, beautification, economic development, historic preservation and or other projects supported by broad-based city efforts. In March, several City departments and community members joined together in an effort to beautify the downtown area by wrapping traffic control system boxes in vibrant artwork. The city looked at more than fifty pieces submitted by local artists before judges narrowed the choices to ten. Those selected are now displayed throughout the Downtown Business and Arts Culture District. Due to the many requests to continue the Beauty and the Box project beyond the DBAC, the City has announced sponsorship opportunities that are available to businesses, organizations, school groups and individual citizens. To maintain consistent quality for this project, future selected traffic boxes will be covered with a laminated vinyl wrap made by a Tyler company.
