jesussign_1478263155242_12637251_ver1-0HAWKINS — A trustee of Jesus Christ Open Altar Church in Hawkins says the city is wasting taxpayer dollars on a lawsuit over the “Jesus Welcomes You To Hawkins” sign. Mark McDonald claims the city has spent more than $50,000 suing the church to have the controversial sign removed. McDonald says he’s started a petition to help gain support for the city to drop the lawsuit and to protect religious rights.

Documents given to our news partner KETK from McDonald stated a warrant deed was signed protecting the sign. Along with that, a certified letter from Jesus Christ Open Altar Church was sent to City Attorney Alvin Flynn and to the city of Hawkins. KETK reached out to the city of Hawkins and Wood County officials, but calls were unsuccessful. The controversy began in 2015 after the Freedom from Religion Foundation threatened to sue the city because the sign was placed on what it considered public property.
