East Texans Observe Memorial Day

TYLER — A number of observances are planned around East Texas this Memorial Day. One of the events is an 11:00 a.m. service at the Field of Honor at Tyler Memorial Park on State Highway 64 West. Guest speakers will be Sheriff Larry Smith and Rev. Mike Ford. There will be patriotic songs, rifle salutes, and bagpipes, and Taps will be played. Refreshments will be served. All veterans and the general public are encouraged to attend.

Elsewhere, the Veterans Land Board Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home on Honor Lane in Tyler will hold a banquet and ceremony from 11:00 a.m till 2:00 p.m. That ceremony is also open to the general public. There are expected to be nearly 200 residents and family members present along with a comparable number of guests. The event will be catered by Dickie’s BBQ and features a keynote speech from Maj. General James K. (Red) Brown of Barksdale Airforce Base. The ceremony will also include a presentation of colors, the national anthem, and Taps.
