Tyler Police Issue Scam Alert
Posted/updated on: June 27, 2017 at 10:12 amTYLER — The Better Business Bureau has notified the Tyler Police Department that it’s received numerous phone calls from citizens about a caller claiming to work for the Tyler Police Department and asking for a donation to the organization. According to a news release, the Tyler Police Department will not solicit any monetary funds over the phone. If you get one of these calls, police say do not donate money — just hang up.
Police say these types of charity phone scams are all too common. According to the news release, the scammers will say they’re associated with police, firefighters, or even the military, but give few details about their organization. Police say the scammer will ask for money and is often pushy or aggressive with the request. If you’re unsure if a fundraising effort or charity is legitimate, police and the BBB suggest you request written information about the company, ask how your money will be used, and research the company.
