TYLER – Smith County commissioners took no action Tuesday on new ownership of the Carlton Hotel. The commissioners were scheduled to discuss, in executive session, the possible sale of the building, which was opened over 60 years ago. But, following the closed door session, the matter was not discussed and no action was taken. County Judge Nathaniel Moran had previously said they have received some proposals for the property. But he gave no details. It’s not known if those proposals are still on the table of if the county will continue looking. The county bought the building in 1977. The last county office moved out, for better facilities, nearly four years ago.

Smith County Clerk Karen Phillips praised her Vital Statistics Department Tuesday for receiving the 5-Star Exemplary Award for outstanding achievement from the Texas Department of State Health Services, Vital Statistics Unit. She recognized the department’s employees for their work during the Smith County Commissioners Court session. This marks the sixth year in a row they have received the 5-Star Award.

Also during the commissioner’s court session, Hideaway Mayor Pat Bonds gave a presentation about the city as part of the “Connecting Communities” initiative. Bonds said there are nearly 3,500 residents living in Hideaway, the second gated community to become a city in Texas in 2001. City leaders from Noonday, Arp and Bullard have previously presented to the Commissioners Court as part of the initiative.
