This will be the second year of the basketball camp in remembrance of my father, Dr. Charles L. Jackson. The first year was a success having a total of 36 participants, boys and girls ranging in age from 5-18. This year we are also adding more drills along with more head coaches. We hope to have a surprise visit by a member of the Dallas Mavericks and Mack Tuck, a nephew of Dr. Jackson, who has played in China for the past 3 years.

Dr. Charles L. Jackson was a very important man in the community. He was a deacon at St. Paul Baptist Church in Mineola, TX and St. James Baptist Church in Tyler, TX. He also held offices in his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and in the (NAIA) National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics.

Dr. Jackson believed in helping others in the community to strive to achieve high goals in life. He also became very good friends with people who had very important roles in the game of basketball. Coach John B. McClendon, the only African American that was in the class of students of the gentleman who invented basketball, Dr. John B. Naismith. Coach McClendon later introduced Dr. Jackson to Sam Jones a member of the 10 time World Champion Boston Celtics and they too became great friends. Later Dr. Jackson met Norm Sonju, who held a top office position with the Dallas Mavericks and they become good friends as well. Dr. Jackson had his hand in the game of basketball for a number of years.

My father always gave back to the community or was always helping someone in one way or another. We are extremely proud of his accomplishments and even more proud to be his children, son Kevin Jackson the founder of the basketball camp and Kristi Jackson Harris, his daughter. We just wanted to enlighten you with more history about Dr. Charles L. Jackson and the camp.

Texas College looking for men’s basketball coach…
May 6th, 2008 by Smoaky under College Basketball. [ Comments: none ]

Texas College Athletic Director Jay Brown announced today the resignation of the Steer men’s basketball Coach Matthew Cross.

Cross stepped down as the Steers head coach to take the same responsibilities at Talladega College in Alabama, where he will join former Texas College president Billy C. Hawkins.

During his 2-year tenure at the helm of the Steer program, Cross engineered an amazing turnaround winning the 2007-2008 Red River Athletic Conference Championship with an overall record of 20-14 (12-4 in conference play).

Coach Cross joined Texas College in 2006 as an assistant coach under head coach Chancelor Watson. Halfway through the season, he took over a struggling Steer basketball program as the interim head coach. He managed to finish the 2006-2007 season with a 6-16 overall record (5-11 in conference).

His hard work and determination was recognized in 2007 when he was named the Steers men’s basketball coach on a permanent basis. Besides winning the 2007-2008 RRAC Championship, Coach Cross tutored several student-athletes to All-RRAC status. Among those were Jameus Hartsfield (national leader in offensive rebounds per game, steals per game and total rebounds per game), Jeral Davis (national leader in blocks per game) and Czyz Bennett (sixth nationally in points per game).

Brown said, “Our athletic department will miss Coach Cross and wishes him the best in his new position at Talladega College. He brought another championship to our college and we are grateful to him for his services. We will continue to build on his success with his successor. The search for Coach Cross’ replacement will start immediately.”
