2012 Camaro SS Convertible

Seriously, our cars are heavier than ever before. There are valid reasons for the weight gain; safety may be the most obvious. There are other reasons. After all, we must all have multiple DVD’s and of course Nav systems. These factors all come together to make new cars and trucks that usually tip the scale.
Its weight issues aside the all-new 2012 Camaro SS convertible is the perfect cruiser. I’ve said for some time that the Camaro reminds me of the Cadillac CTS. Sure it’s a little sportier but, it’s a little large for my taste. What impresses me most however, is how much fun it is to drive around town topless.
I was lucky enough to get perfect convertible weather for the test week. Not only is the Camaro quiet with the top down, it also looks fantastic. Honestly, I think even with the top up it looks better than the non-convertible option. It seems to have more of a rake to it. This does create a few problems with visibility with the top up. If I owned this car I can tell you that most of the time the top would be down. With the top down you can see everywhere, zero blind spots.
Even the opening and closing of the top is effortless. You simply reach up and un-hook the lock, located just above the windshield, push one button and in seconds you’ve got blue sky.
The SS comes with the 6.2 liter LS motor offering well over 400HP. As far as mileage goes, the stated mileage is 16mpg city and 22mpg on the highway. Truth be told, I averaged 17.5 mpg combined. I don’t think that’s horrible for 426HP. Of course that was rowing thru the gears and having fun so, I’m sure I could’ve coaxed another couple mpg out of it, but, where’s the fun in that?
I couldn’t do this review without telling you how good the 20” Midnight Silver painted wheels look. Not only do they look great when they’re clean, they look even better with a heavy coating of brake dust from the Brembo Performance brakes. I never washed the Camaro. To me, it looked as good leaving dirty as it did when it was delivered straight from a detail.
The price of the 2012 Camaro SS Convertible will grab more attention than a redneck at an Indy car race. The total cost of a loaded SS will set you back forty three large. That’s five grand more than a Mustang convertible in the same trim. Still, it looks fantastic. Just ditch the red interior already.
