TYLER – The Tyler City Council has denied a $1.58 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. According to KETK, several councilmembers cited difficulty finding the necessary matching funds in the city’s already tight budget. The funding, over a three year period, would have seen the hiring of 12 additional firefighters. Just under a million dollars in matching funds would have been required over that period. With the exception of essential positions, the city has been under a hiring freeze because of falling sales tax allocations from the state.
