Astros star Jose Altuve asks out of leadoff spot to have more time to get ready to hit

HOUSTON (AP) — Jose Altuve asked manager Joe Espada to move him out of the leadoff spot and into the second hole for the Houston Astros. The reason? He wanted more time to get ready to hit in the bottom of the first inning after coming into the dugout from left field. Altuve is playing left for the first time in his career after spending his first 14 major league seasons at second base. “I just need like 10 more seconds,” he said. The 34-year-old Altuve made the transition to the outfield this season after the trade of Kyle Tucker and the departure of Alex Bregman shook up Houston’s lineup. Rockets, Warriors get into shoving altercation in 2nd quarter of heated Game 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Players on the Warriors and Houston Rockets got into a shoving altercation midway through the second quarter of Golden State's 109-106 win Monday night in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series, leading to three technical fouls before tempers flared again just ahead of halftime. With the game tied at 36, Golden State star Stephen Curry dribbled down the sideline when teammate Draymond Green put a hard screen on Houston's Amen Thompson. Dillon Brooks fouled Curry then appeared to become angry about the push and went at Curry and Green. “I got a technical tonight and there was guys way more aggressive than me, so that’s crazy,” Green said. “They were trying to muddy the game   ... Butler returns from 1-game absence to play for Warriors in Game 4 of playoff series against Rockets

The Golden State star returned from a one-game absence and rejoined the starting lineup Monday night for a 109-106 Game 4 Warriors victory in their first-round series against the Houston Rockets, limping at times as he led his team one win away from advancing to the Western Conference semifinals. “More than anything I just wanted to play. This is the best time of the year for everybody, this is why you go through what you go through,” Butler said. “So to be able to miss a game, I don't like it, but   ... Read More

Commanders and Washington agree to a deal to build at RFK Stadium site, a nearly $4 billion project

WASHINGTON (AP) — Growing up in the Washington area, Josh Harris cherished his chances once or twice a year to watch his favorite football team play at RFK Stadium, the home during the glory days when the likes of Joe Theismann and John Riggins made the stands shake on the way to three Super Bowl championships. Now the controlling owner and with fellow locals and longtime fans Mitch Rales and Mark Ein also involved, Harris and his group are a giant leap closer to bringing the team back where they think it belongs. CLEVELAND (AP) — Wide receiver Diontae Johnson agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns on Monday, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Saints quarterback Derek Carr stated publicly for the first time that he has a shoulder injury, but stopped short of disclosing any specifics about how or when it happened, or how it might affect his availability to play during the coming season. “I hate that I have to say this, but I have to say this: Yes, I have a shoulder injury,” Carr said while delivering a guest sermon at a church in Las Vegas on Sunday. “I have an MRI report to prove it,” Carr continued. "The team knows about it. We’ve been in constant communication. There’s nothing wrong. We’re figuring it out and we’re going to go forward with that. Is that OK?" “I've   ... Read More

That was quick. Johnston’s goal 9 seconds in fastest ever for Dallas Stars to start a playoff game

DALLAS (AP) — Wyatt Johnston saw just a little opening and figured why not take a shot on the opening shift. That snap decision became the quickest goal ever to open a playoff game for the Dallas Stars, who got that score from Johnston only 9 seconds in and went on to a 6-2 win in Game 5 of their first-round series against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night. “Got lucky,” Johnston said. “I’s the biggest cliché. I hate to say it, but when you get pucks on net good things happen. Sometimes you see something, and you try it. You never know.” That was the first goal this postseason for the 21-year-old Johnston, who added another one and also   ... Read More

Team Penske turmoil at Talladega brings out defense of Cindric from ex Braves slugger Chipper Jones

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — If there's beef between teammates Austin Cindric and Joey Logano — and none other than Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Chipper Jones is convinced there is — then Team Penske has some work to do to smooth things over. At the end of the second stage of Sunday's race at Talladega Superspeedway, Cindric didn't help Logano enough to Logano's liking and it allowed rival Toyota driver Bubba Wallace to win the stage and valuable bonus points that come with it. Logano launched into an expletive-laden rant on his team radio in which he seethed at fellow Ford driver Cindric. “Way to go Austin,” said Logano in the part suitable for print. “You just gave it   ... College baseball notebook: Schlossnagle sweep against his old team solidifies Texas as nation’s best

Texas got as much and maybe more than it hoped for out of its weekend series against Texas A&M. The Longhorns won three straight one-run games, extended their win streak to nine games and solidified themselves as the best team in college baseball. The series was played against the backdrop of Jim Schlossnagle's first meeting with Texas A&M since he left the Aggies after coaching them to a national runner-up finish last year. Minutes after the College World Series wrapped up, he memorably told the media he planned to finish his career with the Aggies. A day later he was named head coach at Texas. Fans of the burnt orange thought it was a boss move by athletic director Chris   ... Read More

Florida QB DJ Lagway resumes throwing after resting sore shoulder during spring practice

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida quarterback DJ Lagway has resumed throwing after resting his ailing right shoulder throughout spring practice. Lagway posted two short videos on social media Monday of him making throws at CORTX Sports Performance in Ponde Vedra Beach, a training center near Jacksonville that has worked with current NFL quarterbacks Brock Purdy, Anthony Richardson, Jordan Travis and Gardner Minshew. It was a positive step forward for Lagway, a sophomore who reported shoulder soreness in the offseason that carried over from last year. He was limited in spring practice and then played just five snaps in the team's annual spring game, all of them ending in handoffs. The Gators took a cautious approach with Lagway in hopes of   ... Heliot Ramos’ wild Little League homer punctuates another walk-off win for the Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Heliot Ramos thought he’d just leg out an infield single to lead off the ninth inning in a tie game. He wound up circling the bases to win the game, capping his mad dash by diving across home plate in dramatic fashion. Ramos’ infield single followed by two Texas errors that led to the Little League homer gave the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 win over the Rangers on Sunday. It was the Giants’ fifth walk-off win of the year, and it was, by far, the most unorthodox. “It’s been a minute,” Ramos said on the last time he rounded the bases in a similar way. Ramos tapped the first pitch he saw from Rangers reliever   ... Read More

NBA playoff guide: Who plays when, how to watch, what the odds are

Oklahoma City is into Round 2, the first team to advance in the NBA playoffs. And on Sunday, New York, Minnesota, Boston and Indiana — all with 2-1 series leads — will look to take a big step toward joining the Thunder in the NBA's elite eight. The Knicks visit Detroit, the Timberwolves host the Los Angeles Lakers, the Celtics visit Orlando and the Pacers visit Milwaukee. Those four games will be hard-pressed to match Saturday's drama. Denver — without Russell Westbrook — blew a 22-point lead down the stretch, then saw Nikola Jokic miss a wild desperation shot in the final moments — only to have it caught and dunked by Aaron Gordon for the win over the Los   ... Shedeur Sanders’ dramatic fall to Day 3 of the NFL draft is still baffling

Shedeur Sanders’ dramatic fall to Day 3 of the NFL draft baffled fans, analysts and some general managers and coaches. Sanders was considered a top-five overall pick after finishing his career at Colorado, but he wasn’t even among the first five quarterbacks selected. He slipped all the way to the fifth round without any obvious explanation, leaving everyone to speculate about his shortcomings and question whether Hall of Fame father Deion Sanders somehow scared teams away. Shedeur Sanders was never involved in any off-field incidents, yet his character was criticized by various media outlets who cited unidentified sources in the weeks leading up the draft. ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons said Sunday that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich's son was responsible for a prank call made to NFL draft pick Shedeur Sanders. Though Jax Ulbrich provided the number, he was sitting beside an unidentified friend who actually made the call to Sanders. The Falcons said Jeff Ulbrich was unaware of the data exposure or the prank until after the fact. They offered "sincere apologies to Shedeur Sanders and his family” in their statement, and Jax   ... It’s just, there’s only one Gabe Landeskog in the world, you know, that kind of person and player.
