america 250 graphicThe United States of America -- simply called "America" in most places in the world - is more than a country or a land mass on the Earth. America, more than anything, is an idea. It's an idea that was considered radical 250 years ago when America was born. The American Idea turned government as it was understood in the 18th century on its head. The American Idea is that the people -- ordinary people of ordinary birth -- are sovereign over government, rather than the other way around.

From that radical idea sprang a society that advanced peace, freedom, innovation, opportunity and prosperity in ways never before seen in history. And thus was born a nation that would become a beacon of hope for the entire world.

This American Minute is a collection of "audio appetizers" -- audio vignettes -- that are intended to whet the appetite to learn more about the greatest nation the world has ever known.
