February 2014 - Report and Summary

The month of February 2014 was drier and slightly cooler than normal. Compared with February 2013, the month was 2.8 deg. Cooler, and 0.42 inch drier. Year-to-date rainfall was 3.93 inches more in 2013 than in through the end of February 2014. The thirty-day outlook had called for above normal temperatures and near normal precipitation.

February began very cold. Arctic air shoved into the region on the evening of the 1st, and again on the 4th. Both of these systems produced rain. A disturbance crossing on the 6th broughtlight snow to the western counties. Winter storms crossed again on the 8th and 11th. A trace of snow fell with the former, and sleet and freezing rain fell with the latter. Ice accumulated on vegetation and bridges with the storm of the 11th.

Cool and dry weather continued through the 16th. A dramatic warming occurred between the 17th and 20th, with temperatures running well above normal. Slight cooling, taking temperatures back closer to normal, came between the 21st and 25th. The warming was the result of upper air high pressure shifting over the region. The slight cooling came as the ridge weakened and weak cold fronts crossed on the 21st and 23rd.

An Arctic cold front crossed on the 25th. This held temperatures below normal through the morning of the 28th, with warming that afternoon. Showers and a few thunderstorms occurred on the evening of the 25th, with amounts highly variable ranging from a few hundredths of an inch to an inch and a half.

The 28th was windy.

The reporting period for temperatures and phenomenon on each day is for the twenty-four hours ending at midnight hours GMT--6 p.m. CST and 7 p.m. CDT. The reporting period for precipitation is for the twenty-four hours ending at noon GMT--6 a.m. CST and 7 a.m. CDT. All times are given using the twenty-four hour clock, and are expressed in Greenwich Mean Time.

Observations are from NWS Station 41/9207/4 in Tyler, Texas. The term "normal" refers to averages from the standard climatic period 1971-2000.
