October 2012 - Report and Summary

The month of October 2012 was drier than normal, but saw near normal temperatures. Compared with October 2011, the month was 1.8 deg. Cooler and 0.48 inch drier. Year-to-date rainfall through month's end was nearly double in 2012 than in the extremely dry 2011 a rise of 17.16 inches. The thirty-day outlook had called for above normal temperatures and near normal precipitation.

The month began seasonably warm and dry. Between the 6th and 9th, an upper air storm and cold front crossed. This brought light rain, and unseasonably cool temperatures with record low maximum temperatures on two days. Upper air high pressure brought warming between the 10th and 13th, with another cold front and weak upper air low pressure between the 14th and 16th. This lowered temperatures, with light rain on the 16th from Eastern Pacific Hurricane Paul.

A cold front on the 17th brought a brief cool-down between the 18th and the morning of the 20th. Mid-level high pressure built back into the region on the 20th, and brought warm temperatures until a strong cold front arrived on the evening of the 25th. Rain was widespread in the region both from the surface front and the 850-mb. Front on the following morning.

Surface high pressure and a northwest flow aloft set up, in part the result of Atlantic Hurricane Sandy. This brought very cool temperatures until a slow warm-up commenced on the 30th. Frost was widespread on the morning of the 28th, and a few locations reached freezing on that morning and the following morning.

The reporting period for temperatures and phenomenon on each day is for the twenty-four hours ending at midnight hours GMT--6 p.m. CST and 7 p.m. CDT. The reporting period for precipitation is for the twenty-four hours ending at noon GMT--6 a.m. CST and 7 a.m. CDT. All times are given using the twenty-four hour clock, and are expressed in Greenwich Mean Time.

Observations are from NWS Station 41/9207/4 in Tyler, Texas. The term "normal" refers to averages from the standard climatic period 1971-2000.
