Hall of Famer Michael Irvin on the Cowboys and on Super Bowl XLVIII

January 31, 2014

The last time the Dallas Cowboys played in a Super Bowl, the Roman numeral was simpler (XXX) and Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin played in it. Irvin visits on Radio Row with Bill Coates on the Cowboys as well as his pick for Super Bowl XLVIII.

The Big Game plays the Big Apple.

January 31, 2014

Some Super Bowls are bigger and better remembered than others. But when a Super Bowl comes to the Big Apple, it’s bound to be remembered regardless of what happens on the field. At Super Bowl XLVIII, Broadway between 34th and 47th became “Super Bowl Boulevard.”

Joe Theismann on the Jerry, the Cowboys, Manziel and more.

January 31, 2014

Dallas Cowboys fans may not remember Joe Theismann kindly. He was the quarterback for the Washington Redskins during the height of the Cowboys/Redskins rivalry and he contributed to more than one unpleasant Sunday afternoon for Cowboys fans.

Wearing a championship ring earned in a Redskins victory over Miami in Super Bowl XVII, Theismann joined Bill Coates on Radio Row to talk about the old rivalry, the Cowboys of today, Jerry Jones, the current controversy surrounding the name of his former team, Johnny Manziel, RGIII and much more.

Why don’t the Cowboys play in Super Bowls anymore?

January 31, 2014

KTBB went to its first Super Bowl in 1993. In 1996, KTBB was on hand to see the Cowboys beat the Steelers in Super Bowl XXX.

KTBB has been to 18 Super Bowls since. The Cowboys haven’t been to one.

We took the opportunity to ask several of our Radio Row guests, “Why?”

Mitch Berger’s path to the Super Bowl passed through Tyler.

January 31, 2014

Mitch Berger punted for 15 seasons in the NFL, including the 2008 season for the PIttsburgh Steelers. At the end of that season, Mitch and his Steelers teammates beat the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.

Mitch Berger’s path to the Super Bowl passed through Tyler Junior College, as he recalls to Bill Coates on Radio Row at Super Bowl XLVIII in New York.

Daryl Johnston on Super Bowls (and why Dallas doesn’t play in them anymore).

January 30, 2014

Daryl Johnston was an All Pro fullback for the Dallas Cowboys the last time the Cowboys played in a Super Bowl — which was 18 years ago. Now a color analyst for Fox Sports, Daryl spoke with Bill Coates about the Cowboys long post-season drought and the dimming prospects for any near term relief.

Jerry Kramer on big games in cold weather.

January 30, 2014

On December 31, 1967, Green Bay Packers right guard Jerry Kramer took out Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Jethro Pugh, allowing the Packers’ Bart Starr to score on a quarterback sneak. The play snatched the NFL Championship out of the hands of the Dallas Cowboys.

That game remains the coldest game ever played in the NFL and has come to be called the “Ice Bowl.”

On the eve of Super Bowl XLVIII, Jerry Kramer talked with Bill Coates about playing big football games in cold weather.

Walking around the neighborhood of Super Bowl XLVIII Media Headquarters

January 30, 2014

New York City is a city of icons. Whenever we got the chance, we took some time away from Radio Row at Super Bowl Media Headquarters to stroll the neighborhood.

NYC photos

The landmark building of the 19-building complex called Rockefeller Center, “30 Rock” (tall building at center) is home to NBC and Saturday Night Live.

NYC photos

Over 200 flags surround Rockefeller Plaza, the part of Rockefeller Center that contains the ice rink. The flags represent the member nations of the United Nations. During the Christmas season, every flagpole flies a U.S. flag.

The spires of St. Patrick’s Cathedral glisten in the bright winter sun. St. Pat’s is undergoing a top-to-bottom cleaning. The spires are now cleaned of close to a century of city grime.

No longer the tallest in New York, but always the matriarch of skyscrapers, the Empire State Building looks down on 5th Avenue.

Saks Fifth Avenue has stores all over the world. But there is only one Saks that is actually on 5th Avenue.

Not quite idiosyncratic to New York City but close, Hasidic Jews can always be spotted by their distinctive black hats.

One of the things to do in the winter in New York is to take a turn on the skating rink at Rockefeller Plaza. This young man skates under the gilded sculpture of the Greek god Prometheus, who, according to mythology, gave fire to mortals.

Radio City Music Hall is home to the Rockettes. It is also a top entertainment venue that attracts the brightest stars. Not quite idiosyncratic to New York City but close, Hasidic Jews can always be spotted by their distinctive black hats.

It was a bright sunny day in New York but it was still cold. Unlike other cities, much of living in New York involves being outdoors in whatever weather Mother Nature serves up. This police officer is directing pedestrians and traffic on busy 7th Avenue.

Did the Las Vegas ‘Strip’ borrow spectacular signs from Times Square or was it the other way around? Either way, the signs light up the night at 7th and Broadway.

Former Mets & Yankees great Darryl Strawberry on overcoming addiction.

January 30, 2014

Darryl Strawberry is no stranger to big games. He played in World Series for both the New York Mets and trhe New York Yankees. But he was as well known for his problems off the field as for his outstanding performance on the field. Strawberry was making the rounds on Radio Row at Super Bowl XLVIII to talk about his efforts to help in overcoming addiction.

Former Broncos WR Vance Johnson on Manning and Elway.

January 30, 2014

Vance Johnson played in three Super Bowls for the Denver Broncos between 1987 and 1990. He joined Bill Coates and talked about the Broncos that will face Seattle on Sunday in Super Bowl XLVIII and the inevitable comparison between current Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and Broncos Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway.

More On Media Day

January 30, 2014

media day photos

The old hands tell us that in the early days of the Super Bowl, if you wanted to talk to a particular player, your best chance to do so consisted of showing up by the pool at the team hotel. That worked in those days because of the fact that the early Super Bowls were played in Los Angeles, Miami and New Orleans. It also helped that the early Super Bowls were not yet the near national holidays that they are now.

All of that has changed. Some say that Super Bowl Sunday now eclipses Thanksgiving Day as the number one food day of the year. The Super Bowl is arguably the biggest annual event in America. Media attention has followed.

Thus the NFL created Media Day.

For two one hour sessions — one for each team — the NFL makes every player on both teams available to members of the media.

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning answers whatever questions come his way. Some of them actually pertain to the game on Sunday.

Because most Super Bowls are played in warm weather cities or in covered stadiums, Media Day usually takes place on the field at the Super Bowl host stadium. New York is not a warm weather city. MetLife Stadium across the Hudson River in New Jersey is not a covered stadium. Those two factors served to push Media Day indoors.

It was very tight quarters at Media Day 2014 on the floor of the Prudential Center.

The number of members of the media and the distances that they travel to cover the Super Bowl is testimony to the magnitude of the NFL’s annual event.

Reporters and photographers come from all over the world to cover the Super Bowl. On the floor of the venue at Media Day, you hear almost every spoken language.

It is generally to the credit of the players and the coaches that they do their best to answer questions — whatever they are and from however far afield they come. By and large, the participants in the biggest game of year are cordial and friendly.

Super Bowl XLVIII Media Day is the third such event to admit members of the public. While the media bump into each other and jostle for position in front of players, fans sit in the stands and watch it all happen. As a part of the admission price, the NFL provides a special radio receiver that allows fans to select which player microphone to which they desire to listen.

Local protesters try to attract the attention media members. These local citizens are unhappy with Newark schools superintendent Cami Anderson.

Game face. Denver Broncos head coach John Fox strikes a serious pose as he fields questions from reporters at Media Day.

Media Day at Super Bowl XLVIII

January 28, 2014

By tradition, Tuesday of Super Bowl week is Media Day – the day when every player on both teams is required to make himself available to the media. Here’s a look at a very crowded Media Day staged on a covered hockey rink for Super Bowl XLVIII.

Gil Brandt on cold weather, Manziel, the Cowboys and more.

January 28, 2014

Gil Brandt was the VP of Player Personnel for the Dallas Cowboys from the team’s inception in 1960 until the team was purchased by Jerry Jones in 1989. He joined Bill Coates on Radio Row at Super Bowl XLVIII and talked about playing big games in cold weather, prospects for Johnny Manziel in the NFL (he thinks they’re huge), the current state of the Dallas Cowboys and much more.

So what do New Yorkers think about hosting a Super Bowl?

January 28, 2014

In most cities, the Super Bowl stops the town. Nothing stops New York. We asked New Yorkers on 7th Avenue what they thought of having Super Bowl XLVIII in their city.

New York Daily News columnist Mike Lupica on Radio Row.

January 28, 2014

If it’s true that New Yorkers have a certain, shall we say, attitude, then New York City sports columnists really have an attitude. The New York Daily News’s Mike Lupica talks with Bill Coates about the weather for Super Bowl XLVIII, MetLife Stadium vs. Cowboys Stadium, the Dallas Cowboys, New York sports teams and New Yorkers in general.

You can own a piece of NFL history.

January 28, 2014

The minute anything touches the Super Bowl or any NFL championship-level player or game, it acquires value.
