Smoking Ban Enforced at Smith County Jail
Posted/updated on: December 4, 2011 at 5:31 pmSMITH COUNTY — Inmates in the Smith County Jail can no longer smoke. Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith estimates about 99% of the prisoners smoke. As of December 1st though, their cigarettes are taken away, forcing inmates to quit cold turkey. Sheriff Smith said smoking was not banned in the past because the old jail made it difficult to enforce. Sheriff Smith also said that smoking is something you can take away from inmates. He added that they can only take away so many things, from visitation to commissary and smoking. Sheriff Smith said all tobacco products have been banned.
