Athens Nativity Scene Back on Display
Posted/updated on: November 30, 2012 at 11:35 amATHENS — The controversial Christmas display in Athens has gone up again. Last year, a national atheist foundation called for the Nativity scene to be dismantled because it sat on the courthouse lawn. The Freedom from Religion Foundation claimed that the religious display was unconstitutional because it blurred the lines between church and state. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott showed his support for Henderson County’s decision to keep the Nativity scene in place — as did hundreds of demonstrators who crowded the courthouse square last Christmas. The Freedom from Religion Foundation may make claims again this year. It’s already asked to put up its own display in Athens in response.
