thumb_tjc-signTYLER — Tyler Junior College will award 100 scholarships to students majoring in science, technology, engineering or math in Fall 2013, thanks to a grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. TJC received a $263,200 grant from the Coordinating Board. The Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, or T-STEM, scholarships will provide awards of up to $2,500 per student for the 2013-14 academic year. Eligibility is based on high school grade-point average and the completion of courses toward a STEM career. Continued eligibility beyond the fall semester is dependent upon academic achievement and completion of coursework.

“The T-STEM grant program presents a great opportunity for students majoring in science, technology, engineering or math,” said Dr. Kim Russell, TJC vice president of advancement and external affairs. “Our scholarship office is working now to issue the first awards, and I would encourage anyone who qualifies and is seeking a STEM career to apply.”

By criteria established by the Coordinating Board, students must have achieved a “B” average or above on all science and math course work completed in high school. To remain eligible, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout participation and be enrolled in at least 12 hours in each long semester throughout the program.

“Careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics are some of the most rewarding available today and our STEM graduates are in high demand,” said TJC Provost Dr. Homer “Butch” Hayes. “These types of scholarship programs provide additional incentive for qualified students to complete their studies and move on to upper-level studies, and, ultimately, into the workforce.”

New or returning TJC students majoring in STEM career fields defined by state criteria are eligible. Eligible students are encouraged to complete the TJC Scholarship Application; you can go to http://www.tjc.edu/scholarships to access it online.
