TxDOT signTYLER — Here’s a quick look at other work planned in Smith County by the Tyler District of the Texas Department of Transportation.

TYLER – Construction work gets underway Monday to expand Tyler’s West Loop 323 to six lanes, build a new railroad overpass and eliminate the bottleneck between Bellwood Drive and State Highway 31 (West Front Street). “Weather has played a big role in delaying the start of this project, but we’re on go now,” said TxDOT public information officer Larry Krantz. “It’s going to be an interesting project to watch.”

The $12.2 million project calls for building a temporary railroad overpass adjacent to the existing location, demolishing the existing structure and then building a longer, more modern overpass to accommodate the additional lanes built beneath it.

Raised medians will also be added, filling the gap between Bellwood Drive and Elm Street.

Additionally, the project will greatly expand the intersection of Loop 323 and West Front Street to accommodate free-right-turn lanes and dual left-turn lanes for Loop 323 traffic onto West Front Street.

“We’re outgrowing our infrastructure in Tyler,” Krantz said. “And while that can be painful in the short term, in the long run it says good things about the economy in Tyler and across East Texas.”

The work is largely scheduled to be done during nighttime hours and on weekends, but some daytime lane closures and turn restrictions may be in effect at various times during the project. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015.

Also this week, nighttime construction work began Sunday to repair and resurface State Highway 110 between Aberdeen Road south of the Troup-and-the-Loop intersection in Tyler and just north of Toll 49. Work is scheduled to be conducted between 7 pm-6am Sunday-Thursday. The $1.2 million project is scheduled to be completed by the end of July.

Elsewhere in Smith County, TxDOT maintenance crews this week are scheduled to perform resurfacing operations on Farm Road 346 between U.S. 69 Flint and Farm Road 2964 (Rhone’s Quarter Road) near Whitehouse. Daytime lane closures will be in while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic in two-lane areas.
