Mosquitoes Breeding Ground Found in Longview

KETK reports that after an extensive search, city officials found potted plants were where the mosquitoes were breeding on Nixson Drive. The search started after routine mosquito spraying and trapping only got rid of about 100 mosquitoes on the street. City health staffers began a door-to-door search and were led to a backyard with dozens of potted plants holding stagnant water, which according to Longview Environmental Health Supervisor Buck Farrar is a perfect breeding ground for the insects.
“Someone had a rather profuse garden operation in the backyard with lots and lots of pots, and they were full of dirty, stagnant water, and they were harboring mosquito larvae,” said Farrar. So we issued a violation to the folks and they cleaned them up on site.” The influx of mosquitoes only affected Nixson Drive and a few neighboring streets. City officials say otherwise, mosquito numbers this summer have not been above average.
