Authorities Identify Man Shot, Killed at Gun Range

31shootingSMITH COUNTY — Officials Monday identified a man who they say died after accidentally shooting himself at a Smith County gun range. The victim was Gary Dooley, 62, of Hideaway. Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Gary Alfred ordered an autopsy.

At approximately 4:45 Saturday afternoon, the Smith County Sheriffs Office received a call from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office saying it had received a 911 call regarding the shooting in the 16900 block of Highway 31 West near the Smith/Henderson County line. Smith County Sheriffs Office deputies responded to the call along with the Dixie Fire Department and deputies with the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers arrived on scene to find Dooley, who had an apparent gunshot wound to the head. At the time of the call, the victim was reported to be still responsive. However at approximately 6:45 p.m., deputies on the scene confirmed that Dooley was deceased. At this time the investigation is ongoing, and more details will be released as they become available, according to a Smith County Sheriff’s Office news release.
