Second Tyler ISD Student Selected as Gates Millennium Scholar

Cristina Sanchez2TYLER — Robert E. Lee High School senior, Cristina Sanchez has been selected as a member of the Class of 2015 Gates Millennium Scholars. Ms. Sanchez, along with John Tyler High School senior, Carneisha Daniels, joins only 1,000 students from across the country to be selected as Gates Millennium Scholars. ā€œIt is an honor to be a 2015 Gates Scholar,ā€ Ms. Sanchez said. “This scholarship will allow me to help others by pursuing medicine at The University of Texas at Austin.” Ms. Sanchez has received many honors and awards as a member of the REL National Honor Society, the Red Raider Band, Spanish Club, Key Club and various other campus and volunteer organizations.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education at a school of their choice in any discipline area of interest.

Continuing Gates Millennium Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following discipline areas: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science. The scholarship will fully fund the recipientā€™s education through the receipt of a Ph.D.
