KETK reports Aaron Castile Bowling, 26, was indicted by a Gregg County Grand Jury last week after a 2-year-old child died in January. Police said on December 30 at 1:09 a.m., officers were dispatched to a welfare check at the Contessa Inn on Highway 31. Authorities were told a child had been injured in one of the rooms at the location.

When officers made it to the scene, they found the room where the incident allegedly occurred and were told the 2-year-old’s mother had taken the child to a local hospital just before law enforcement arrived at the motel. Additional officers went to the hospital and located an unresponsive child being cared for by medical staff. The child was then flown by helicopter to Dallas due to the severity of her injuries.

As the officers began to investigate the nature of the toddler’s injuries, police said the parents provided a story not consistent with the child’s injuries. The child’s mother, Jamie Nelson, 24, of Winona, told officers she began to talk with a family member about the child’s welfare during the night. The relative became concerned about the child and contacted police. The concerned family member asked police go to the motel and check on the child. Due to the child’s injuries, Nelson was arrested for abandoning/endangering a child by omission or criminal negligence.

Bowling was arrested for abandoning/endangering a child by omission or criminal negligence and two Class C misdemeanor warrants. Both suspects were taken to the Gregg County Jail without incident. Bowling’s charges were upgraded to injury to a child with intent to commit serious bodily injury. On January 2, the child died at a Dallas hospital. The cause of the child’s death remains under investigation by the Longview Police Department.
