KILGORE – As anticipated, Kilgore College trustees have voted to close three programs. According to KETK and the Longview News-Journal, the move came despite comments from a series of surgical technology students and educators who strongly defended that course as vital to the Longview/Kilgore medical community. A trustees committee had recommended closing the surgical technology, drafting and design, and commercial photography programs.

According to a news release from the school, selected drafting courses will still be offered as part of its manufacturing programs. The college also said it will still offer academic transfer photography courses in support of the transfer curriculum for journalism. And school President Dr. Kays repeatedly said the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board would allow the surgical tech course to return as it is within three years of cutting it. In the news release, Kays was quoted as saying, in part, “KC’s programming must shift with the demands of the workforce.”
