Jaylon-Carroll-Wortham-150x150LUFKIN — A teen has been taken into custody for the weekend shooting of a Lufkin postal worker. On Tuesday Lufkin Police Department detectives, with cooperation from the United States Postal Inspection Service, obtained a warrant for the arrest of Jaylon Carroll Wortham, 17. According to KETK, Wortham is charged with assault causing bodily injury against a government contractor/employee. The LPD detectives sought the warrant following a combined LPD/USPIS investigation into a November 22 assault incident in which Wortham alegedly caused bodily injury to Lindsey Guthery, a mail carrier employed by the United Stated Postal Service.

On Saturday, November 22, officers responded to 1105 Sayers Street in Lufkin following a report Guthery had been shot. She was wearing a USPS uniform and delivering mail on foot at the time and told officers as she crossed in front of the residence located at 1105 Sayers Street, she heard a shot and felt a stinging sensation at the back of her left thigh.

She said she fell to her knees and wiped blood from the back of her thigh. Guthery stated she believed she was shot intentionally by someone in a group of people near the front porch of 1105 Sayers Street. The officers saw a bleeding wound, approximately one-quarter-inch in diameter, to Guthery’s leg. From the appearance of the injury and the description of the shot, the officers determined an air rifle shooting a BB or pellet was the likely weapon used to shoot Guthery. An x-ray revealed the projectile was lodged between muscles and next to the bone of Guthery’s leg, in the area above and behind her knee.

The detectives interviewed people at 1105 Sayers Street and identified Wortham as one of those in front of the residence at the time of the incident. Through interviewing Wortham, the detectives learned Wortham had allegedly discharged an air rifle in the direction of Guthery. Wortham denied intentionally firing the air rifle at Guthery; he stated that he was shooting at a bird or a squirrel, he did not know which, and that he did not see Guthery nor know he had shot her. At 12:00 noon Tuesday, Wortham surrendered to LPD Detectives at Angelina County Jail and was booked on $7,500 bond.
